Flora Fields

A field of chance

A moving-image work by River Davis, and a follow-up to the 2022 collection, Floressence. Seventy-eight flower photographs gathered across twelve countries between 2016 and 2023 are deconstructed through a generative pixel-manipulating system and reconstructed into infinitely looping mandalas. The collection continues River’s work drawing on the Taoist concepts of the Golden Flower and the uncarved block. Each flower is stripped of association through displacement layering until it is no longer recognizable, becoming a tool for contemplation on the repeating cycle of life and death, rather than a picture that holds the viewer’s preconceptions.

In this browser-based experience, the series of generative photographic manipulations meets field recordings in a generative system of chance pairings. (R) loads a new pairing from the collection, (I) shows the info panel, (Space) pauses the composition, (S) saves a frame, and (F) switches to fullscreen.
