ABOUT

River Davis is an American multidisciplinary artist known for exploring the effect of consumer culture on social consciousness and art’s capacity to function as a counterbalance.

He works across sculpture, installation, serigraphy, photography, and moving image, building work from the discarded found media of consumer culture turning the systems that manufacture consent into artistic material. He has exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, Berlin, Budapest, Montréal, Portugal, France, and Hong Kong, and is the youngest contributor to the Venet Foundation's annual summer exhibition. His collaboration with Bernar Venet produced Generative Angle Paintings and EVENT, released in partnership with Sotheby's, with work presented at Perrotin, Paris; the Guangdong Museum of Art; the Musée Picasso, Antibes; the Art Museum Riga Bourse; Waddington Custot, London; and Ceysson & Bénétière, Tokyo.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I use the discarded found media of consumer culture to create wall art and installations for individuals and institutions that value the type of art that examines the social effects of consumerism. My art recognizes aspects of the system and compartmentalizes them into tangible experiences. For me it is "art" as an act of defiance against the structures of "want"-based consumption, but, since this "postmodern critique" offers no solution to the problems presented by consumer culture, I design and build interactive public art that use esoteric structures to share the metaphycsical knowledge of universal culture, giving institutions and local municipalities a way to provide public art spaces for reflection and meditation.
